Our group was hosted by the Gateway Clipper located in Pittsburgh’s historic Station Square. Riverboat cruises are the perfect way to see this beautiful city by water. For visitors to Pittsburgh, a trip on the Gateway Clipper is one of the top attractions you can do in the city.
Gateway Clipper Cruises – A Tour Perfect for Visitors
Your Pittsburgh river cruise launches from Station Square, Pittsburgh’s landmark entertainment district. The area is home to many restaurants, a dancing fountain, historical pieces that honor the city’s history in the steel industry and shops. Getting to the DocksThere are several great parking options in Station Square and within walking distance from the Gateway Clipper. If you are looking for public transportation options, there are busses that go to Station Square, and both the "T" and the Monongahela Incline have stops there as well.

Roatán cruises provide access to laid-back beach towns and secluded shores. On the Big Island, you can mingle with monkeys and “Jesus” lizards, snorkel with stingrays, and zipline through rainforest canopies. In case you couldn’t tell, I really think these clipper ship cruises are a great way to see Pittsburgh from a number of vantage points on the city’s three rivers. Of course, all Pittsburgh river tours take you past Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Once a key player in the industrial revolution, older Pittsburgh skyscrapers tell of the city’s early prominence. But, Pittsburgh has shed its image as a dingy, industrial town to emerge as a world leader in the green building movement. On a trip to Pittsburgh last month, I took my first riverboat cruise in the Steel City!

I also enjoyed seeing the beautiful architecture of this city dedicated to green construction. Lock & Dam Dinner CruiseOn most Thursdays, experience the delicious Lock & Dam Dinner Cruise. Featuring the best BBQ on the three rivers, you will get to experience the process we call “locking thru” as our boat passes through a functioning lock & dam. The Gateway Clipper has dinner cruises, themed cruises, and more. Our Pittsburgh boat rides are the perfect way to spend a day or evening out!
You’ll also pass under the iconic Pittsburgh bridges that define this cityscape. We took our trip, a historical perspective of Pittsburgh, down the three rivers that define the Pittsburgh landscape. As we admired the architecture of this truly American city, we learned about George Washington’s escapades here early in his career. We also learned about how the confluence of the three rivers and the industrial revolution shaped this city. Sing it loud with your family, friends (or maybe with your favorite legend) during this night of karaoke fun you will remember forever. Enhance your memorabilia collection or Fan Cave with autographs from your favorite players and legends.
This 60-minute tour traverses the three rivers and is narrated to highlight the city's unique history, beautiful architecture, and other facts you may not hear anywhere else (excluding this blog, of course). No matter the time of day, odds are good you can look to the rivers near downtown Pittsburgh and see these iconic blue, gold, and red riverboats ferrying passengers or giving a water-level city tour. The Sunset Dinner Cruise offers the perfect opportunity to unwind after a long day. Another popular dine and cruise event is the Pittsburgh Wine Tasting, featuring wines from around the world.
This disconnect is where the problem of the Gateway Clipper comes into play. If you sign up for their standard sightseeing cruise, you're going to have a fairly typical sightseeing experience. As a visitor, 60 minutes out on the water is a pretty great tourist activity. But as a local who knows the waterways around Pittsburgh inside and out, we simply wanted more.
Or travel back in time on an adventure through the towering Maya ruins of Tulum. When you’re done exploring, unwind with a beachside massage at Playa Mia. From culture savoring to soaking up sunshine, you’ll find a world of adventure waiting for you in Cozumel.
But in being honest, I have to say that there are two very different experiences you can have on the Gateway Clipper fleet- one as a resident and one as a visitor. Depending on what category you fall into, this may change your approach to this tour significantly. The Legends photo pass gives you access to all scheduled player photo ops and permission to grab a selfie with that legendary player while chill’n on the pool deck. Cruise to Costa Maya and find ancient Maya ruins and mysterious jungles just begging to be explored, as well as private beach clubs and trendy restaurants— all in one place.
It’s 250 square miles of paradise packed with entertainment and history, all just 30 miles south of Cancun. The Great Maya Reef just off the coast is the second largest in the world— it’s a must-snorkel spot. Or you can kick back at the port village of Mahahual with an ice-cold michelada— a spicy beer cocktail— in hand. For a culture fix, head to the Kohunlick ruins to see the famous Temple of the Masks. With its lively tropical reefs, crystal-clear waters and ancient ruins, Cozumel is ripe for one-of-a-kind adventures. Cruise to Cozumel and head to Chankanaab National Park, where you can snorkel among the colorful reefs and schools of tropical fish that give this island its premier diving status.
The Gateway Clipper fleet is docked at 350 W Station Square Drive right next to the Sheraton Station Square hotel. Cruises are offered multiple times per day; however, starting in late October the frequency of departures decreases for the winter. Rivers of Steel offers a variety of ways for groups to experience our attractions – and locations throughout the eight-county National Heritage Area.
